No Signal is the photography project by Brice Portolano consisting the life story of five people. Under the scope of the project, Portolano takes photos of people who prefer nature and live a simple life by escaping from metropolitans. Portolano focuses on those who have not disconnected from the society or technology at all, but have started to question the values of the West.
Portolana says, “More than half of the world’s populace live in cities. Human beings have never been too detached from the nature and open areas.”
Inspired by this opinion, No Signal describes five portraits that managed to severe their ties with cities. The name of the first portrait is ‘Arctic Love’, and there is a young woman as the main character: Tinja.
Tinja lives in a place 290 kilometers far away from the nearest village in Finland. She takes care of 85 sledge dogs literally, and relishes the geography in the middle of nowhere. She lives without electricity and water. She cooks her meals at a wood burning stove, and takes her water from a river by breaking the ice cover every morning. She is happy to be leading a life in the nature with her dogs. Tinja says, “I don’t desire material things. The mother nature provides me everything I need”. She has been sharing her life with Alex, a former professional ski jumper, for the last two years.
Brice Portolano took part in the daily life of Tinja for a short time. As a result, he took these perfect photos. Here are the sledges, dogs, trees, snow, cold weather and a vast landscape! Just enjoy it!
