Autism is a chronic disorder of brain development which is mostly characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism is known to start before the age of 3, but it can only be diagnosed around that age.
Curious to understand the way of thinking of his son Elijah, a father and San Francisco-based photographer Timothy Archibald started capturing his unique behaviors of him.
Photographer Timothy Archibald started capturing the moments in his son’s life when he was just 5 years old.
In the beginning, Timothy says, his goal was to photograph his son’s unique and complicated life.
Later on, he realized that he could understand his condition better through those photos he has taken.
He started to photograph each of his daily rituals.
Then he understood that his unique behaviors which seem unusual are actually meaningful.
For example, he understood why Elijah repetitively said “The doors will be closed, please stay away from the door,”…
Or kept writing “open” and “close” on papers he found.
He realizes that Elijah did all of those because of the garbage truck, which made a lot of noise and had two doors opening and closing.
In this photograph, Elijah tries to avoid the loud noise by putting his head into a garbage can.
At first, Elijah did not care about his father taking photos of him.
But then, perhaps, he understood why he was doing it, and started to pose for his dad, as well as helping him to choose locations for photoshoots. 🙂
His pose in front of the house they live in is considered to be the greatest work of Elijah.
